Reading Literacy               Narrative

I asked my mom if she ever read to me as a child the other day,

because I don't recall her ever reading to me. She responded, "Of

course I read to you! Quite often actually." The only reason I asked my

mother this question is because I was asked the same question for an

assignment in my English class. I found out that my mother read

children books to me about three to four times a week. I know that

reading is important and as a soon to be mother I too will be reading as

much as I can to my daughter.

Although my mother said she read to me as a child, I've never really

enjoyed reading. I found myself skmming through a section in high

school to find the answers I needed, rather than just reading the whole

section. In high school if i was told to read a book as an assignment

like "How To Kill A Mockingbird" or  "Of Mice And Men" then I would,

but just for fun you will  probably never see me read a book. Since I do

not enjoy reading books I attempted to listen to audiobooks, but that

doesn't work out for me too well. I tend to lose interest  about what the

speaker is reading. Sometimes I often wonder why I do not enjoy

reading.

I honestly do not recall being taught any specific reading or text

apprehension and comprehension strategies. I feel like if I would have

been ( or remembered being ) taught those things it would have made

me a more successful reader in middle school and  high school. I can

only hope that in my current English class I can become a better

reader.

Based on my past experiences, my expectations about the role taht

well will play in my success in college is that I will be able to understand

and comprehend any form of reading that may come my way. I expect

to be taught how to comprehend better and also how to become a

stronger reader.
